It gets rough sometimes.

I stand by the sea. They come to me unbidden. I don’t want them here! I can wrestle them back into their hole; but oh, the effort it takes. I am spent after the struggle. How can I know the good things when they are afoot? They prick, prod, and poke. They disturb the better angels of my nature. I can get no satisfaction from them. They are useless to me, useless!

Yet, I’ve been known to invite them back. Oh, yes. I conjure them of my own will sometimes. Is this part of the process? All agree that it is. But one can’t see the picture if one is in the frame, hmm?

It's vexatious. I am steered to distraction. I, the captain of my own destiny, driven from the wheel in pursuit of phantoms!

Vexations flit and dart before my mind’s eye. I devote all attention to them. My muse flies before them. My reason falters. When they appear, I clutch my head and groan with melancholy. They return again! Again to torment me and remind me of subjects best left unstudied.

Yet every time they bid me open the book, I open the book. I turn every page. I read avidly. I study the photographs. I read the footnotes.

They applaud. I wither!
